Over at the Intel Vision 2022 keynote, Team Blue is ready to push for more dominance in the mobile market by introducing the 12th Gen Intel Core HX mobile CPUs.

Different from the usual announcement of focusing on the gaming aspect, Intel’s aim of delivering these new HX chips to the laptop world is to buff up the processing power for professional use cases such as CAD, heavy 3D animation, and complex visual effects layering. Created with desktop-caliber silicon and made for mobile workstations, you can find the best of the bunch – the Intel Core i9-12950HX – packing an 8P + 8E configuration with a total of 24 threads and can reach boost clocks as high as 5GHz, all the while just taking 55W as the base TDP which is 10W more from the HK line.

Quoting Daniel Rogers, the Senior Director of the Mobile Product Marketing department, Intel basically took the desktop Alder Lake chips, remove the “lid” and replace it with a BGA package to achieve an overall lower profile in terms of vertical dimension. Additionally, to get a better processing power within the same volume and architecture, they have to cut down on the Iris XE EU count as well (But who’s gonna use those in a powerful machine anyway). In exchange for that, according to the official info, users can expect 65% more performance across all sorts of multi-threaded workloads thanks to the performance ceiling getting raised once again with more overall cores, memory, and I/O capability via the Intel Thread Director technology.

Users may also be delighted to hear that all 12th Gen Intel Core HX mobile CPUs are fully unlocked for overclocking and that includes the cores, and memory (DDR4 and DDR5). However, selective restrictions will be applied to specific models but expect the top variants to get the full set of support. There are also some minor changes across the board such as external Thunderbolt 4 controllers (HK platform uses integrated versions), a lot more USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, and PCIe 5.0 at 16 lanes on top of the existing PCIe 4.0 and 3.0 connections hanging off the PCH.
