Four restaurants shut down by state inspectors

Raw chicken stored in plastic bags and roaches crawling near food were some of the violations that shut down four restaurants in South Florida.

Galuppi’s on the Green in Pompano Beach, Griot Caribbean Take Out in West Palm Beach, Antojo Latino in Royal Palm Beach and Krave Lounge in Sunrise were among the restaurants shut down last week.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel typically highlights restaurant inspections in Broward and Palm Beach counties from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. We cull through hundreds of restaurant and bar inspections that happen weekly and spotlight places ordered shut for “high-priority violations,” such as improper food temperatures or dead cockroaches.

Sun Sentinel readers can browse full Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade county reports through our state inspection map, updated weekly (usually Mondays) with fresh data pulled from the Florida DBPR website.

Any restaurant that fails a state inspection must stay closed until it passes a follow-up. If you spotted a possible violation and wish to file a complaint, contact Florida DBPR here. (But please don’t contact us: The Sun Sentinel doesn’t inspect restaurants.)

Ordered shut: July 21; re-opened July 22

Why: Twelve violations (five high-priority) forced state inspectors to shut down this restaurant.

Over 30 live flies were buzzing around and landing near the soda guns, near the main bar, in the kitchen near the prep tables and landing in the trash.

Inspectors also found “an accumulation of dead or trapped insects” in control devices throughout the restaurant.

Food was also stored improperly as inspectors found raw chicken stored in a plastic “thank you” bag, and raw food was stored above cooked food in the cooler. Employees also did not use gloves when touching ready-to-eat food.

The restaurant re-opened the next day.

Ordered shut: July 20, reopened July 22

Why: Inspectors shut down this restaurant after discovering 14 violations, six of which were high-priority.

Five dead roaches were found near the walk-in fridge and under the handwashing sink, and 16 live roaches were crawling in various areas in the restaurant, such as the prep table with food on it, the walk-in fridge, and on top of a plastic container lid.

A fly was also found landing on turkey in the restaurant.

Other violations included an employee using the bathroom and returning to work without washing hands, fry oil stored on the floor in a plastic container and not enough water pressure in the sink to wash hands properly.

The restaurant was allowed to re-open two days later.
