A complete break down of every enemy in Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters, and how to kill them.

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters is a game that is jam-packed with enemies. There’s everything from titanic war machines, to scuttling cultists, to mutated hulks. Things might start in your favor, after all, you are the Hammer. That balance quickly tips once daemons, heretic Astartes, and Hellbrutes start entering the fray.

As innumerable as the enemy may be, they are not unkillable. Heck, even the immortal ones can be felled once you know what to do. Knowing is half the battle, so getting to grips with Nurgle’s children before actually engaging in a brutal scrap, will go a long way. We won’t be covering bosses in this guide, only the basic enemies. Don’t worry though, we have boss guides ready to go.

Nurgle Cultists are the lowest of the low. Just about every stat is as low as the game will ever go, and individually, they aren’t a threat. Unfortunately for you, Cultists rarely operate alone, and enough of these guys pumping rounds into your Knights will eventually start to hurt.

Nurgle Cultists have very low HP and can be downed with a single round from your Storm Bolter - even at level 1. That being said, you will need to use Psybolt (or Force Strike). Grenades and AOE attacks also work wonders as Cultists often clump together. Grenades can also be used to disrupt Cultists, and break them out of Overwatch.

The Heavy Stubber Cultist is an upgraded variant of the Cultist, and will often be seen hiding slightly further back in a patrol formation. They are packing a Heavy Stubber, and this is far more dangerous than the Nurgle Cultists' piddly Autogun. Not only that, but this guy has more HP, making him harder to kill.

The best way to kill these guys is to get close to them and take them out quickly. Interceptors are excellent at this, especially if you upgrade their Teleport Range to 15, as it allows them to functionally outrange even the extended range of the Heavy Stubber. Grenades also work wonders.

In the early game, these guys are priority targets.

These guys are zombies. They are soft, squishy, and not very threatening. They do, however, come in large numbers and can quickly overwhelm you if you don’t deal with them. Not only that, but they often come with Cultist support. Poxwalkers, when used in this capacity, can pin your Knights in place whilst Heavy Stubbers set up and mess with your formation.

Killing Poxwalkers is pretty easy. They are melee troops, so they are forced to run at you. Using Overwatch can quickly thin their numbers on an approach. Not only that, but they lack HP, and can be downed in a single hit by most Knights/Weapons. They are especially vulnerable to AOE attacks.

Don’t get overwhelmed by them, however. They come in large numbers and can bring their fallen back to life. They are often used as cannon fodder for stronger enemies too, so bear that in mind.

Bloated Poxwalkers often support Poxwalkers, and can be a pain to deal with. They have twice as much AP as a Poxwalker, they deal more damage, and they punish you for killing them. Thankfully, they are pretty slow.

Patience. Bloated Poxwalkers are slow, so kill their entourage first, and then hunt them down once the coast is clear. If the Bloated Poxwalker manages to raise the dead, then throw a grenade to kill his minions and then finish him off. Groaned Poxwalkers are weaker than regular Poxwalkers, which is nice.

Plague Marines are the natural successor to Cultists. These guys are bigger, meaner, and harder to kill. Whilst Mortarion’s Death Guard are mighty, they don’t quite have the natural advantages of their estranged brothers from Titan.

If you are fighting a Plague Marine, you need to make sure it dies in a single turn. These guys are almost 3x tougher than a Cultist, so this is easier said than done - especially early game. Plague Marines can heal up to half of their HP per turn, so if you can’t kill them, you are better directing your damage elsewhere.

Their plague spewer doesn’t do great damage, but what it does do is spread Plague like nobody's business. This thing will chip away at you for three turns, and there simply isn’t enough Purify to get rid of it all if your whole squad gets hit.

Stay apart, focus fire, and take them out one at a time. Armor Pierce or Armor Break can also go a long way.

The Boltgun Plague Marine is everything the Plague Marine is, but substantially more damaging when it comes to direct damage. These guys can take potshots from a distance, chip you down, and generally be a nuisance.

When it comes to killing these guys, it’s mostly the same as their plague-spreading brothers. Make sure you are dealing enough damage to kill them, or they will heal. Focus fire and take them out.

These guys are the real deal. They are the ultimate Plague Marines and can deal massive damage up close and at a range. Not only that, they are substantially more difficult to kill, with more than double the HP and Armor. Thankfully, they lead squads of Plague Marines, as opposed to replacing them outright.

Plague Champions are a priority target when you see them. Their abilities are incredibly strong, either hindering your Squad or buffing the offensive and defensive capabilities of everything around them. Not only that, but their plasma pistol and power fist are very powerful, and leaving them alive can quickly have one of your Knights dead.

The best way to take out a Plague Champion is to use Armor Pierce, or Armor Break and focus them down. By the time you fight Plague Champions, these effects will be much more common. Plague Champions can’t heal like regular Plague Marines, so if you can’t kill one, consider going for a Critical Hit and disabling them.

Finally, Plague Champions are quite vulnerable to Stun. Paladins buffed with a Stun-based weapon and Iron Arm from an Apothecary can Stun a Plague Champion in a single strike, letting you Execute them for a free kill, and bonus AP.

Plague Bearers are essentially an upgraded Poxwalker. They are much tougher, deal more damage, and whilst they can’t revive fallen allies, they have a bag of tricks that more than makes up for it.

Plague Bearers are potent melee combatants who also just so happen to have a lot of health. These things are almost as tough as a Plague Marine and deal about as much damage - although they need to be closer to deal said damage. Mutate is their big gimmick, and they will use this often. Not only that, it can trigger when you hit them too. This can, if RNG doesn’t go your way, make them harder to kill.

You want to bypass their Mutate, so strike them with your strongest attacks to kill them before it gets out of control. Plague Bearers also lack ranged attacks, so Overwatch is especially effective against them. Finally, they are very slow and tend to clump together. Using AOE attacks and simply moving away from them can work wonders.

Plague Ridden are very much like Plague Champions - they are just super-powered variants of an enemy you have fought before - in this case, the Plague Bearer. These guys are tough but aren’t much of a threat.

Plague Ridden has a lot of HP, but no armor. This makes them susceptible to just about everything. Line them up and gun them down. Be aware that they have an Auto that triggers on hit that adds +10 to your Warp Surge counter, although this can only trigger once per turn. Critical Hits can also cripple their ability to function as a useful unit, allowing you to focus on more threatening enemies.

The hyper elite of the Death Guard. The Blightlord Terminators are slow-moving but very dangerous. They are tougher than Plague Marines and deal much more damage. Not only that, but they are more than capable of dealing damage at any range.

Blightlords are very tricky to deal with if you give them a chance to set up. Their ranged damage is immense, and their Terminator Armor makes it so it’s very hard to disrupt them when they start laying down suppressing fire. Getting in close to deal with them is going get you smacked too, which isn’t great.

The best way to kill them is to use an Interceptor or Paladin. Interceptors can bypass First Strike by Teleporting in range, as this does not trigger First Strike. Paladins can easily tank First Strike, and if buffed to be a Stun Paladin, can Stun Blightlord Terminators in a single hit allowing you to execute for an instant kill and AP bonus.

Blightlord Champions are tankier Blightlord Terminators who are focused on getting in close and smashing skulls. They are also very effective at shutting down your melee units thanks to their Plague Shields.

Blightlord Champions are very slow, and not as tough as you’d think before they buff themselves up. They are very susceptible to long-ranged attacks that ignore armor. Purgators in particular are very good at dealing with them. Not only that, but Blightlord Champions tend to stick close to their allies, making them vulnerable to AOE damage. Purgators can also Critically Hit Blightlord Champions and shoot off their shield arm.

If the Blightlord Champion hasn’t set up his Plague Shield, then getting into melee with an Interceptor or Paladin can mess them up. Paladins can Stun them to death, whereas an Interceptor with an Armor-Piercing melee weapon can cut right through them.

The first of two vehicles in Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters. The Blight Hauler is a long-ranged artillery piece that is heavily armored. They can disrupt your formations, and seriously impact your squad's survivability. They are not to be ignored.

Blight Haulers can do a lot of damage, but they are very, very squishy. They may have 8 Armor, but their health is pitiful. So much so, that a single Armor Piercing attack from just about any weapon will kill it. There’s nothing more to it.

The last unit at Nurgle’s disposal is the Hellbrute. This is a monstrous foe at every range and is capable of closing the gap shockingly quickly. He is a priority target and needs to go down the moment you spot him.

The Hellbrute can be a nightmare to deal with, simply because it can get in your face, remove Knights from play, and devastate any cover you may be standing in. He also has a lot of armor and a decent amount of HP.

The best way to kill him is to focus him down with high damage, armor-piercing attacks. Armor Break can also work in a pinch. When you see a Hellbrute, you need to kill it ASAP. Be warned that they explode for massive damage shortly after they are killed. This makes ranged Knights the preferred death dealer.
